I may have a slight problem with my main character in my first draft.

I'm really excited about my fantasy novel. It's the first I've written that I plan on finishing, and I'm happy with the story.

I've read a few books on character development. I've done a lengthy character interview with my main character, a young woman.

I'm 10k words into the draft. She's served a good purpose so far but now I need her to do some things in the next scene.

The problem is, I don't know what she would or wouldn't do or even how she'd say what she says.

I've only really read a few books where it really felt like the author knew exactly what their characters would do and may have even written a whole lot of back story that didn't make it in.

For example, George RR Martin's books. Now I'm not comparing myself to him or my book to his books but my problem is the same.

I feel like I knew all the characters. I knew who was or wasn't religious. I knew who would or wouldn't do drugs. I knew if they believed in curses or if they believed in magic. I knew what they would wear and what they wouldn't wear. I knew who would kill someone and who would let someone else take them away instead of killing them. I knew who would say an expletive and who wouldn't or who would be fine with a curse word but not with a swear word.

If I don't know my character or have to think about it for a page or two before I can decide what they may may, I'm going to end up with a lot more unedited draft with things I need to fix later or may end up with words and actions in the book my character wouldn't actually do because I decided I wanted to do something but wasn't sure if my character would do that. If I think about it I have enough knowledge about the character to write the scene but it's not a "No of course she'd never do that" or "Oh yeah, that absolutely sounds like her."

I can kind of get away with it because she may be getting amnesia so a lot of things she may do that she wouldn't do would be from that.

I know I'm not George RR Martin and only on my first draft of my first true novel but I want my characters to feel that real.

I know I'm not the only person who has this issue. Just curious if there are any tips and tricks for your character's reality.

TL;DR: I knew all the characters in ASOIAF. I knew if they were religious, if they'd do drugs, if they believed in magic or curses, if they'd kill or have someone else take them away, what swear words they'd use and what they wouldn't, what they'd wear, if they ate their pudding before or after their meat or may be they'd eat in a different order. I want that for my characters.

Edit: I'm going to read all your comments. I've favourited this thread so I can come back. I'm going to run some errands tonight like my grocery shopping and then settle in to read. Thank you to everyone who replied and to those who are still replying.

Edit 2: I read all your comments and I think I know what to try now. I'm really overwhelmed with the amount of great responses and a little bit by how many.

I'm going to make a pinterest board for her like some people have suggested or a polyvore.

I'm going to write some back story scenes that may or may not go into the book.

I'm going to make a list of all the important things. I've already done some of that but I think I'm going to just be super literal and make a big long list of things I know about her and then go down one by one and ask myself if she'd do this or do that. It will probably be a long list and may not be finished tonight or even this week but I'll get to know her from doing that.

A lot of you have suggested having another read her. I'm not comfortable with that yet. This is only my second draft of anything and I'm not really happy with my writing yet.

I'm grateful for all the advice.

If you have a suggestion and it isn't already here, I'd love to hear it.

Thank you all again, I can already tell I'm going to be a regular and am excited about all the helpful people on this sub.

I'll update in a few days if I think of anything or if things are going well.
