Why are gay men being lumped in with trans people who are committing crimes?

This goes for the women too. Why are cis women being accused of being gay/trans and vice versa? What point is being made by claiming someone is a different gender/sexuality when they are not? I was under the impression it was only against women to do this but the men are getting it too.
