Part of why I love this chamber

I just wanted to preface this with I'm not a gun owner or anything close to that. I posted a reply that didn't break any rules on this chamber and there was just a huge amount of downvoting with very little upvoting.

If you didn't see it basically I was asking a common question non gun owners have about mass shooters and how they can afford the guns they use to commit the crimes.

The top comment was from a very kind user named u/throwawaygunguy123 who just answered my question and gave some good information on why it's hard to track mass shooters.

Even though I got a ton of downvotes, it's good to know that there are still good people on this subreddit.

If you have the time give this user an upvote because they deserve it.

EDIT: Holy crap this blew up. Thanks to everyone for the upvotes. Most people who messaged me and replied to the thread were very nice and I appreciated all the info

If you're wondering, I posted this in r/confession because I just wanted to get it off my chest and didn't want to direct any hate towards this chamber or anyone on it

I understand mass shooters can be really triggering and painful for people and I'm sorry to anyone this has affected. I didn't mean to make anyone uncomfortable or upset with my question.

However some people are still messaging me about this and I just wanted to clarify once and for all

I'm not anti gun and I think people have the right to own them. I just was asking a question because I didn't understand and wanted to know more information on the topic. I fully support the right to bear arms and I think it's a good thing people can protect themselves with a gun. However I do think there should be some form of reform to prevent people who shouldn't have them from having easy access to them. From what I've seen in the comments on this thread a lot of people agree on this

I fully understand guns aren't the problem and that mental health is a big part of mass shootings. I fully support services that can help people with mental health issues and I think it should be more accessible to people who need it and we should have more resources to help people struggling with their mental health.

I also think we should have more resources on how to identify people who are potentially dangerous and may be planning to commit a mass shooter. Just as an example, I've seen a couple mass shooters talk about their plans online or hint at things that would be considered red flags if someone saw them

I think we should teach people how to identify things like that and we should have more resources to help people who are potentially a danger to others from actually doing anything

If you still have a problem with me, that's your choice and I can't do anything about it. But hopefully this clarifies everything once and for all and you can just leave me alone now.

EDIT: I want to reiterate my view on guns and mass shooters. I think the vast vast majority of shooters have a mental health issue and are unstable, but I think there are a few shooters that fully understand what they're doing and know exactly what they're doing and want to do it:

I think people like Adam Lanza, who killed his mom for her guns, seemed to fully understand what he was doing and wasn't mentally ill but just a shitty person who wanted to hurt others

In contrast, I think people like the Parkland shooter and the Aurora shooter were mentally ill and unstable:

I think we should give them fair trials and if they're deemed to be unstable we should take that into consideration when we sentence them. However I do think they should have some form of punishment and not be completely forgiven for what they did.

However I do think it is important to remember they did have an issue of some kind:

I think we should have more resources to help people with mental health issues because it can lead to really shitty outcomes if left unchecked

In regards to guns, I think they're a great tool for people to protect themselves and I don't think we should completely ban them or anything like that:

However I do think we need to reform our system for selling guns so people who shouldn't have them can't get access to them:

I think we should have more resources to help people who are potentially unstable and unstable from actually getting guns

I don't think we should completely ban people with mental health issues from getting them, but that's a topic for another time.

I hope this clears up any confusion about my stance on the issue.
