What is your favorite off the beaten path travel experience?

The one I immediately thought of when I saw this post was visiting the crater lake of Mount Nyiragongo, deep within the DRC. We had to walk for 7 hours to get to the 2 base camps at which point it was a 4 hour hike up a mountain to see the lake. We rarely saw any other people let alone travelers while we were there.
