I apologize if this has already been discussed, but I've never been in a similar situation. I'm a software engineer with 5 years of experience in an American company. I currently earn a decent income, and I've always felt that it was fair, considering my experience and the current market.

Recently, the situation got a bit tricky. I was about to get a promotion at my current company, and I was really excited. However, I was curious about the salary. As it turns out, they offered me a slight increase, something around 5-10% more than my current salary. I was a bit disappointed, as I had expected a more significant increase, especially considering the current market rates.

When I asked about the salary, they explained that my role has changed and my salary should be adjusted to reflect these changes. They emphasized that my new role would be more about leadership, teamwork, and mentoring, which they believe justifies the lower salary. I understood their logic, but I have to admit that I was a bit taken aback.

I've never been in a similar situation before, and I'm not sure what to do. I'm still happy with my current job, and I don't want to leave without exploring all my options. I've been with this company for 5 years now, and I've always been a bit loyal. I'm not sure if I should take the promotion or not. I'm afraid that if I accept the promotion, I'll be stuck with a lower salary and fewer opportunities for growth. On the other hand, if I decline the promotion, I might miss out on an opportunity to advance and make a positive impact.

Has anyone else experienced a similar situation? What would you do in my shoes?
