The USA isn’t a democracy anymore – It’s an oligarchy and has been since 1945, run by a small elite of plutocrats, corporate, banking and political interests.

To convey the message I will present you a short summary of an academic study into this issue, from Princeton University.

In the study the researchers compared 2,000 U.S. policies against what a substantial U.S. majority wanted. Their conclusion was that the opinions of the average American citizen have near zero impact on the actions of the U.S. government.

In contrast, Politicians were very responsive to the moneyed elites.

U.S. doesn’t resemble any democracy, but resembles oligarchies and dictatorships.

In fact, the study found that U.S. is not really a democracy at all.

The study’s discussion section reads:

“Economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on U.S. government policy, while mass-based interest groups and average U.S. citizens have little or no independent influence.”

There are many reasons why the average American has virtually no political power.

Chief among these is the fact that our system of legalised bribery allows wealthy donors get their voices heard above all else:

And if that doesn’t work, there is always vote rigging and discrimination, to get the desired outcome.

Another reason for oligarchy is that lawmakers have to spend most of their time pleading quaintly for cash or risking be primaried.

Average citizens, therefore, have little influence on Washington.

And the wealthy have a lot of influence.

Regardless of whether ordinary Americans want something, or whether we oppose it, lawmakers generally do what the elites want, unless, of course, ordinary Americans say the same thing.

But when they do, lawmakers still generally do what the elites want. Even when a large majority of Americans favoured a policy change, the elites were still far more likely to determine the policy’s fate.

If you don’t believe me, just look at all the policies that are supported by a large majority of Americans, which U.S. politicians refuse to pass.

Examples include:

forcing corporations to pay their fair share of taxes
providing free university education
allowing sick people to buy imported pharmaceuticals
ending gerrymandering
stopping net neutrality
Having further gun control

We all know that politicians are for sale.

But since whoever pays the piper plays the tune, we know that the elites determine American policy.

And this is far removed from a healthy democracy where the politicians represent their electors.

Another indicator of this is that there isn’t a single third party member of Congress.

Furthermore, politicians from the same party who convey slightly different messages are demonised as a threat to democracy.

For example, certain politicians have been called radical socialists, when really all they did was suggest slightly higher tax rates.

In reality, the U.S.A. is tightly controlled by a small ruling class.

A good example of this is the relationship between government and corporate media.

One of the most important functions of the media is to convince people that the U.S.A. is a functioning democracy.

However, we can see that media is no longer the check on power that they once were, and are now nothing more than a propaganda tool of the ruling class.

The government-media relationship prevents discussion of a range of issues from public consciousness, like healthcare, climate change and endless wars.

The plutocracy have also placed severe limits on revisions of history that challenge the reigning ideologies.

Another good indicator that the U.S.A is an oligarchy and not a democracy is the government’s response to free speech.

One of the most important indicators of a democracy is the freedom of speech.

But the USA’s recent history shows that they regularly breach this.

For example, Julian Assange was imprisoned for publishing leaked government documents, proving that the government regularly breaks laws and kills innocent people.

Furthermore, the government even carries out armed raids on militias, who are operating perfectly within their constitutional rights.

So, despite revisions to our understanding of American politics, the nastiest forms of class war continue to thrive.

If you are wondering what you can do about this, educate your friends and family.

The first step is to raise class consciousness.

The revisions of history and the limits on discussion means that many of us are not aware of the current state of American democracy, or lack thereof.

Furthermore, you can also support third party candidates and independent media.

But the thing we mustn’t do is continue to vote for the lesser of two evils.

The last thing we mustn’t do is continue the farce that is the U.S.A’s democracy.
