Why would anybody want to argue with me about AI or “both sides”?

I’m an engineer and I have a career where I have to learn about a few big tech trends, including AI. There is a LOT of different AI, but I’m not sure where all this consensus “both sides” is coming from. It’s like people have no idea how deep the rabbit hole goes.

For example, GPT-4.0 has been around since last summer, but it has been more visible recently because of new generation models like normal LLaMA v4 and Claude 3.0 which came out all of a sudden. There are hundreds of other AI models like this.

We see emerging AI all the time in things like image editing, video editing, music, and face editing. We aren’t anything close to the end of this era of AI, and we are incredibly in the beginning, where the best things we have are all in beta.

Then there are people who think they can change this whole phenomenon or say things like “AI will collapse the economy” if we let it.

Newsflash: AI already collapsed the economy in some way and this may be the end of imperial capitalism in the US. Not because AI is so powerful, but because those who benefit from it will replace workers without a social safety net.

The big issue of AI is not just whether we should allow it or not. The big issue is how we make sure it doesn’t cause mass displacement of jobs and economic collapse. It’s not too late to have this conversation. We need to have a hard conversation about social safety nets, taxation, etc. It’s time to start having this conversation if we want to prevent an economic collapse.

Edit: don’t get me wrong that I want to “regulate” AI. Most of the time, I think regulations are incredibly stupid and don’t help anyone except big businesses. What I want is for more emphasis on a safety net, so we can replace normal jobs that used to be done by people.

Edit 2: I’m also not in any way against AI. I agree that it’s absolutely amazing and I love it. But there is a dark side of the economic situation that we need to step into. The ways in which we will have incredibly amazing technology, but also have no idea how to adapt to it. That’s the big issue.

Edit 3: Also, the consensus of “neutrality” is complete bullsh\*t. Everyone has an opinion on AI, even if you “both sides it”. If you do have an opinion on it, it’s time to take a side. The ways in which we will adapt to AI are not in any way neutral.
