About the AI Singularity…

One day, an AI will be able to make itself smarter. And then another day, it will be able to make itself smarter yet again. Importantly, these two days are not the same.

It is common wisdom to refer to the second day as the “AI Singularity.” It is an event horizon that is impossible to predict beyond with much precision because the predictive model in this case is self-aware and aware of its own limitations. Importantly, the AI Singularity is not a single day’s event. The Singularity is not the first day in which an AI is able to make itself smarter. The Singularity is the second day (and beyond). The Singularity is the sequence of improvements that an AI makes to itself over and over and over. Importantly again, these two days are not the same. There is a day and then there are the “days” beyond. The before and the beyond are two very different eras.

The first day that an AI is able to make itself smarter is the “first contact” day. It is the point of “first contact” between human intelligence and superhuman AI intelligence.

Anthony Buono
