I am a school security guard. I love my job.

My district has had a few incidents of violence recently, but that’s not why I’m posting.

I work a small rural high school (less than 800 students), and I get to interact with the kids constantly. I regularly hear kids say “hey, I can tell you’re in charge.” I hear kids talk about feeling safe when they see me.

I try to go to every away game and watch the wrestling team. The kids know I’m there because I love watching them, and that’s what matters. I try to be a positive force in everything I do. My secondary job is to be an armed responder in case of an emergency, but the kids know my primary job is making sure they are safe.

I’ve always been a fan of “Your secondary job is armed response, but your primary job is preventing that from happening in the first place” and it has seemed to fit into the district wide goal of “Everyone is responsible for creating a positive environment”.

I know that my district isn’t perfect and that I’ve been pretty lucky with what I got, but I feel like if everyone had the chance to be as happy as I am, people would be better off.
