To summarize:

In Ragnarök, it is heavily implied that most of the Berserkers in the game are actually females who were transformed via magic and forced to serve the Vanir invaders. Some of them even ask Kratos to kill them.

Therefore, they are not truly enemies, but victims of circumstances who deserve to be pitied. In fact, Kratos even lets one go who tries to attack him in order to spare her life.

Let's also not forget that the game was heavily influenced by Japanese mysticism and the visuals are often inspired by the Berserkers in Norse Mythology and Japanese folklore. As you know, the Berserkers are the source of the 'generic anime catgirl' trope.

Therefore, my theory is that the developers were trying to make a satirical commentary about this trope and the futility of war in general. This would include the 'catgirl' concept, as it originates from the Berserkers that get their powers from animal bones and their feral behaviors.

The developers took this concept and turned it on its head by making it part of the story, where Kratos learns about the true nature of the Berserkers and decides to spare one of them.

There you have it, guys. The catgirl hate has reached AAA video games.

It saddens me to see it like this, but it also makes me glad that there are some people that see the futility of this trope and the damage it causes to people's minds and emotions.
