Can (or should) a philosopher be concerned with the public relevance of their ideas and research?

This is a question I have as someone working on their PhD in philosophy. In recent years, I have seen and heard on many occasions concerns about the lack of public relevance (or "social impact") of philosophy - concerns that I personally share to some extent.

As a result, I find myself concerned not only with conducting good research, but also with the fact that the ideas I am exploring in my PhD thesis can have some kind of practical application or be of some use to others.

I would like to know your views (and the usual sources and references you can provide to answer this question). Thank you very much.
