The world would be a better place if parents would just stop overindulging their toddlers and let them be bored.

I’ve been reading someredit stories about parents who thought they were giving their kids a cool experience because it was “free” “I woke up my daughters in the middle of the night and we baked cookies for Santa before going to bed again” “I took my kids to the park at midnight to look at the stars and it’s something we’ll always remember.”

When I was a kid we never did anything like that. We would spend hours at home on our own unsupervised. The highlight of our day was going to the grocery store. They would go to work and we’d be at home playing with our toys. We weren’t constantly being entertained by our parents. No one was forced to play with us, we were left alone. No one took us to the park at 2am to go on an adventure.

Even my “poor” classmates had overindulging parents. A boy in my grade got a laptop for kindergarten. Everyone in my high school got a car for their 15th bday.

The world is a mess and I can’t help but think that it’s because parents never let their kids feel bored and left alone enough. Everyone thinks they’re special and deserve the world.
