(US) Why can't schools feed kids nutritious food, even if it's a little more expensive? I mean, surely it'd be cheaper to hire a few people to cook than to hire a bunch of counselors and psychiatrists and their own police (much of which is caused by shit food), and formulaic frozen food

I get it, the government has to feed, educate, and counsel all these kids as part of its role to nurture and protect the ~70 million children, but I don't get why food has to be so cheap that it's not healthy. The average American school breakfast or lunch is basically 2-3x a McDonald's or Wendy's meal in terms of calories, carbs, and fat. On top of that, they're served a few times a day (much of which is tossed uneaten) and 2-3x a week the kids can buy a pizza or fast food (Chick Fil-A nuggets, Taco Bell burritos, etc.) at school.

If schools really have to feed kids, why do they have to feed them garbage? Why can't they hire people to make them real food?
