How would a medieval society react to a person with autism?

It's a little bit difficult to explain, but I know for sure that in the Middle Ages people with mental illnesses (epileptics or those with schizophrenia, for example) were isolated from society. What reaction would a person with autism cause in a medieval society?<br><br>The only thing I can imagine is distancing, since people with autism have great difficulty relating to others, are very repetitive in their behavior and are not always attuned to their social environment.<br><br>Am I correct in this reasoning?
