We had a brief relationship years ago. She got pregnant accidentally and after she was 5 months along, we decided we wouldn't be a couple anymore. We agreed to take responsibility for our child. The relationship became uneasier and eventually we just stopped communicating.

Last Thursday, she went into labor and so did our daughter. It’s a long drive to the hospital and I didn’t want to risk my daughter’s baby coming on the way, so we asked if it would be possible to put us in the same room as her mom and birth partner. It wasn’t ideal, but the staff said it was fine.

My daughter had a natural birth and my ex had a planned epidural. Her boyfriend wasn’t there and she was stressed about my presence, so she asked if we could go to a different room. I told her if she could comfort her baby girl who is having her first child, then I can also endure it. Then, I just completely ignored my ex and only focused on my daughter.

My daughter gave birth to a healthy baby boy 3 hours later. My ex had her epidural and it didn't progress for a few hours, but eventually she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

I don’t feel great about the whole situation but these are the choices we made when we decided to become parents. We both needed to be there for our daughters.
