This sub is filled with people complaining about their jobs, and it makes me sad

I’ve been a teacher for 25 years. I’ve been through many phases, ups and downs. I’ve loved it, hated it, figured it out, lost my love for it, gotten old and tired, loved it more than ever, cried, celebrated, and would do it all again without hesitation.

This sub is filled with people saying teaching is figured out, or it’s so hard, or it’s so abusive, or it sucks, whatever. And no, you’re wrong. Or you’ve come to the wrong conclusion. Whether you have 5 years experience or 5 minutes, if you think you’ve figured out teaching, you most certainly have not.

If you’re a student teacher, your job hasn’t even started. If you’re in your first year, you have no idea what you’re doing. If you’re in your first 5 years, you’re not even a real teacher yet, and you shouldn’t be here pretending you know what you’re talking about. Get back to work.

You are not entitled to a perfect job, or an ideal career, or a life of ease. If this job is too hard, try working fast food, or construction, or the medical field. I’ve tried a bunch of careers, and this is by far the best.

Teaching is figured out. We all know that teachers are underpaid, and overworked. If those things matter, go work at Amazon. You will not make a difference there. Whether you realize it or not, you are the most important person in the world to the children in your care, every single day you show up. You are the biggest difference many of them will make.

You will touch lives. Every single day. Forever. Be happy with that.
