ELI5: What is driving up the price of insulin?

My partner and I are trying to have a child, and she is diabetic. She is from southern Europe, where the price of insulin is far lower than in the United States. We both are frustrated when we think about the price of insulin in the Western Hemisphere, so I am hoping a preacher man here can explain it to me.
