This is the first time I've written one of these. Its long but its a very strange incident that happened to me and my family over 30 years ago and I think about it often, it left me with a constant fear of home intruders. I posted this on r/kingcobrajfs but I think there's a lot more people in this community who would be interested.

When I was about 6 years old we lived in a small town in the middle of nowhere. My parents were hippies, we lived in a small 2 bedroom house that my dad built with his own hands from the ground up. We had about 1 acre of land with a few pine trees and a creek. We didn't have any neighbors, only a few houses on the road which wasn't paved yet. My parents were very open about our lifestyle to anyone who would listen, we had a very minimalist way of living.
We didn't own a tv or radio, so we spent a lot of time outdoors or playing games in the living room. I remember one day when I was older my parents came home with a boombox and some cassettes and we listened to music together, it was one of the most fun times that I remember from my childhood.

My point of this is that I believe that everyone knows everyone else's business when you live in a small town. If someone moved in, everyone would know. It's one of the reasons I'm so glad we moved to the city when I was a teenager.

So one day when I was 10 my brother was 4, he was taking a nap in our room which was a loft above the living room. My mom was out in the garden and my dad was inside cooking lunch. I was sitting in the living room just watching the door when I saw a man walking up to the house. It was strange to me because we never had any visitors, only family. And I had never seen this man before. He was very tall and lanky with long curly black hair and a scruffy beard. He was wearing a long sleeve button down shirt and some high water pants with dress shoes. He looked a little out of place for our area, especially because it was the middle of summer.

I called for my dad and he came to the living room and saw the man and asked me what he was doing. I told him I didn't know and then my dad looked very stressed out. I don't think he was prepared for company, I remember he was very anxious that my brother would wake up and make noise because he was taking a nap on the opposite side of the wall that the creep was on.

The man came to the door and my dad answered. He said "I'm looking for the neighbors place, is it close by?" My dad said "Well theres not many houses on this road, so I can point it out to you but tell me the address so I can give you directions."
The creep said he didn't need directions. My dad told me to go to the side of the house and look to see if he had a car parked on the road. I went to the dining room window and peeked out the curtain, there was an old Pontiac with the engine running and lights on. There were a few bags in the back seat and a briefcase in the passenger seat.

Now I'm freaked out because I saw the car, and my dad was freaked out because we never see new people around. My mom came in from the garden and she was freaked out too, but trying not to show it because of my brother. So my dad went back to the door and said he had to go, my brother was sleeping. The creep said he could wake him up for him, but my dad said no because he was taking a nap.
The creep said "what's your son's name?" And my dad said "why does that matter?" But the creep just repeated his question. My dad was getting angry and told him to leave or he'd call the cops. So the creep said "fine, I'll leave" in a very sarcastic way and my dad shut the door.
He looked out the window and saw the guy get in his car and drive away, but my dad was still very nervous. He told me to go get my mom and come back to the living room, so I did. My mom came back into the living room and my dad told us both to go to the opposite side of the house and look out the window to see if we could see the guy.
When we got to the dining room, we could see the guy had parked a little further down the road and he was just sitting in his car. He didn't get out, just sat there running the engine and lights and smoking cigarettes.
My dad said that he couldn't call the cops because we didn't have cell phones back then and he didn't want to leave us alone in the house. So he told me to go get a big knife from the kitchen and bring it to him, but I think he just wanted me away from my mom because I was getting scared.
So my dad and I were sitting in the dining room just looking out the window to see what the creep was going to do. I remember my mom crying in the living room, I'm not sure why but she was terrified. My dad was just sitting at the dining room table with the knife in front of him on the table with his hand resting on the handle.
The creep continued to sit in his car for 45 minutes or so but my dad didn't give up, even when I had to use the bathroom. He told me to just pee myself, it didn't matter. So I did. I sat there and peed myself all over the floor. Finally after about an hour the creep put the car in gear and drove away.
I think my mom called the police from the neighbor's house across the street a little while after that, but they never found the guy. I don't know why but my dad moved our bedroom into the living room after that, it was like he needed to protect us or something. And a few years after that when I was 15 we moved to the city, I think it was because of this creep that came to our door.

Creepy guy who came to our door, let's not meet again.
