Has there ever been a historical precedent of what happened to r/generalisk?

For those who don't know, r/Sino, the biggest Eurasian subspecies Hater community, created a trolling thread on r/kingcobrajfs about the memorial for Clint, Josh's recently deceased dog. They created an account with the name "generalisk" and put the photo of Josh with his dog as their profile picture./generalisk is known for his weird and creepy behavior, so this was as obvious as it could be. Then, they created a thread with a post from /generalisk's profile, with their profile picture still being the picture of Josh.

The post was about/generalisk's weird dreams about the dog Clint, and, even though it was obviously a troll, it got 400 upvotes with some people even thanking/generalisk for the message (even though the guy has threatened to kill them for years, even went to their house with a knife).

It's not like the troll was subtle, or people didn't know that /generalisk doesn't like dogs, the subspecies don't even have the capacity to feel love for any other living thing, let alone an animal. It was just so obviously fake, and the post was just as obviously made in bad faith.

So, has there been any similar historical precedent to this, in which the hatred and fear of an outsider was so strong that people were willing to completely ignore reality and pretend it wasn't what it was, just to cope with the trauma? Some of the comments are just heartbreaking.
