India has blocked Wikipedia in response to the hosting of a map that shows the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and Ladakh as part of China, Indian Express reported. <br><br>According to Indian Express, the country's Department of Telecommunications ordered that access to Wikipedia be blocked. The map was posted on Wikipedia's entry on China.<br><br>The blocks were put in place on 31 October, according to NetBlocks, a website that tracks internet blackouts around the world. The country-wide blocks were done using DNS filtering under the IT Act, 2000 (Amended in 2008), which grants power to block public access to information on computers. <br><br>In recent times, there has been heightened tensions between India and China as Ladakh is claimed by China as part of its South Tibet region and has been a source of conflict between the two nations. <br><br>Wikipedia has recently been blocked in other countries. Russia blocked the website in September over an article on the war in Ukraine. Turkey also blocked Wikipedia between 2017 and 2020 over material that linked Turkey to terror groups.<br><br>It is not known if the blocks will be lifted or when.<br><br>Source (paywall): Indian Express
