ELI5: Why are we getting new tests if a vaccine is available?

I have heard that tests have proven effective a while ago, but they're giving us moderna/pfizer tests here in the US. I've heard a lot of talk about them giving us a vaccine and not moderna/pfizer tests, but I don't know what the moderna/pfizer tests do. Can someone explain?
