Chambers

A little over a month ago, I flew to Taiwan alone to learn this language. I thought I’d document my journey and I have some questions. Any advice?

By way of background, I speak fluent Chinese (I’m Chinese, but I grew up in the US). I’m a native English speaker with 13 years of formal Spanish training and 6 years of formal French. I have a basic to intermediate level of Korean and Japanese. I’ve never been to Taiwan before but I know there are some differences in grammar and vocabulary from Chinese spoken in China. I took a plane by myself with a suitcase and a carry-on. I don’t have hotel reservations or an itinerary. I just want to immerse myself in the language. I have money and a credit card and a passport (obviously) and a working phone with a portable charger. I took an Uber to a random part of Taipei and I’m currently sitting in a cafe writing this. I have some cash but this part of Taipei seems very modern (my Chinese is more than sufficient to navigate everyday life thus far). I’m a little surprised that I can get by so easily with just speaking Chinese, part of why I came here was to learn a new language but it seems like I have all the tools I need to navigate the world. I thought about writing this post in Taiwanese, but this is a chamber for English speakers so I figured it would be best to keep it in English. I’ve been here for about a day but I get the impression that Taiwanese people are generally friendly. When I went to Japan, I had a low level of Japanese and people in Japan often got angry with me when I tried to speak. People in Taiwan seem much more willing to communicate and understand.
