How did Italy survive so long after ww2?

First Italy was an enemy of the allies that lost ww2, after the war they got the help of the US and became a democratic republic order, after the war they where one of the founding members of the eu, and the word order in italy didnt change, why didnt the communist partys in Italy just overthrow the government and become a communist state?
