I think the movie Capricorn One is about the fake moon landing. It was made in 1977 and written/directed by Peter Hyams, who also wrote the screenplay for 2010: The Year We Make Contact.

I think the movie Capricorn One is about the fake moon landing. It was made in 1977 and written/directed by Peter Hyams, who also wrote the screenplay for 2010: The Year We Make Contact.

I think it's really interesting that both movies are about space but Capricorn One is about the moon landing being faked and 2010 is the official sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey, which is about humans being helped to evolve by aliens.

I'm not saying one way or the other whether the moon landing was faked or not. I'm just saying it's interesting to see that the same person wrote a movie that's clearly about the moon landing being faked and then wrote the screenplay for a movie based on a book by Arthur C. Clarke, who co-wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Capricorn One is about the first crewed mission to Mars (in the movie the first two missions to Mars were uncrewed), but the crew is really on a Hollywood sound stage filming their mission.

Here is the plot summary from Wikipedia:

When the three astronauts, Charles Brubaker (James Brolin), Peter Willis (Sam Waterston), and John Walker (O. J. Simpson), who are training to be the first manned U.S. space flight to Mars, learn that their spacecraft is defective and would not be able to support life, they abort the Mars mission. NASA cannot abort the flight as the world is watching and the United States has already spent $1.5 billion on the Capricorn One mission. To avoid embarrassment, the mission is faked with the spacecraft being turned back to Earth as if it really had gone to Mars. The astronauts are placed on a United States Air Force base deep in Death Valley and are told to film scenes of them on Mars in a Hollywood soundstage built on the base. The astronauts are threatened with the murder of their families if they do not comply. Contact with their families is permitted only to provide the illusion of a normal trip to Mars.

NASA's plan goes awry when a normally redundant Retrofire system fails, dooming the astronauts to burn up upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. The men learn of their fate from a technician who sneaks the telemetry data into a care package, and they hatch a plan to escape from the base. After overpowering the guards, the trio hijack a NASA T-38 trainer jet parked at the base for their use, in the event of an emergency. They then decide to fly the jet to the coast and hijack the recovery helicopter sent to retrieve them and parachute into the jungle.

Also from Wikipedia:

In 1995-96, the US government released footage of the Apollo 11 Moon Landings to the public showing the American Flag planted into the lunar surface waving as if blown by wind. The footage was given to the public to dispel the conspiracy theories surrounding the 1995 film Apollo 13 and to prove the conspiracy theorists wrong that claimed the flag appeared to be waving in a wind when in fact there was no atmosphere on the Moon to blow the flag. This footage was later used in the opening credits of the 1996-97 TV series Dark Skies.

When the footage of the waving flag was released, it fueled the conspiracy theories and many pointed out that there appeared to be a massive gust of wind blowing through the flag, but when the astronauts planted the flag into the Moon's surface, they did not appear to be blowing in the wind. Even though there was no atmosphere on the Moon to support a wind, the flag still appeared to be blown by a wind when planted in the lunar surface.
