The guy who tried to get into my hotel room

I wasn't sure if I should post this here, but I thought it was a bit too strange not to. This happened to me yesterday, 01/17/2020. I'm hoping this post doesn't get lost in new as I just created this throwaway account to post this story.

Yesterday, my husband and I went to Miami Beach for work. We stay in hotels a lot, but we usually prefer staying at Marriott or Hilton because of their points program. Yesterday was no different. We arrived at the hotel, did the normal check in process, got our room keys and went to our room. This is where it gets important: the room number.

Our room number was something like xxx, and the next room was something like xxx+1. Now, the numbering system here is very important to the story. Our hotel room number was the odd number and the adjacent room was the even number. Usually, hotel room numbering systems work something like 101 and 102, where 101 is right next to 102. In our hotel, however, if you have an odd room number, the adjacent room has to be an even number. This is something you will need to remember if you want to understand the story.

So, now that you know the room numbering system, we can proceed to the actual story. After getting our room keys, we went to our room, put our bags down, and went to do our work. We are both IT consultants and we needed to go setup some IT stuff for work.

After a couple of hours, we came back to our room to rest for a little while. As we were resting, we heard someone walking down the hallway towards our room. Then, we heard someone trying to use a key to get into our room. At first, I thought it was weird, but we hadn't stayed at this hotel before, so I didn't think anything of it. I mean, maybe hotels sometimes give out the wrong key.

Then, however, we heard the key being used on our door... again... and again... and again... It was like they were just continuously trying to use their key to get into our room. We were shocked. Who does this? It was like Groundhog Day where Bill Murray just kept waking up to the same day.

This was when we were like "what is wrong with this person? Why are they just continuously trying to use their key?"

We were considering calling security at this point, but we didn't. Then, out of nowhere, someone suddenly starts knocking on our door. I'm talking full-on knocking. It's like someone is in a rage!

Slowly but surely, we started to open our door, and I was preparing myself to scream if this was some kind of horror movie where I needed to defend myself.

When we opened the door, we saw a middle-aged guy looking at us with intense anger. He starts screaming at us. "Why is this the wrong room? This is the wrong room!"

I'm just standing there in my pajamas looking at this guy in confusion as he continued to scream at us. We were both like "dude, why are you screaming at us? You're the one trying to get into our room uninvited!"

At this point, security had not arrived yet, so this very intense guy continued to try to justify why he was so angry at us. We told him to go get a new key from the front desk, but he argued with us and said he already had the new key and it still didn't work.

Honestly, I was getting a bit scared at this point, but I didn't want to show this guy I was afraid of him. I mean, we already called security, right? They were going to be here any minute, right? Shit, I hope they get here soon, I thought to myself.

Finally, after about 5 minutes of arguing with this intense guy, he decides to leave. I shut the door, and my husband and I are very confused. We're both like "what the fuck just happened?"

Then, as I was shutting the door, I noticed this guy walking down the hallway towards the room next to ours. I'm talking the exact room next to ours, xxx+1. I was like "wait, if this guy is staying in the room next to ours, why was he trying to get into our room?"

I watched him use his key on the door next to ours without any issues. I continued to watch as he entered the adjacent room and shut the door.

As we were watching him, we heard someone walking down the hallway towards us. It was hotel security. I was like "thank God!"

When hotel security showed up to our room, we explained to them what happened. They were like "what do you mean this person was trying to get into your room?"

We explained the situation to them, and they asked me to show them exactly what happened. I walked them through the entire situation with play-by-play detail, and they didn't seem to care. They were very nonchalant about it. It was like they were used to dealing with this kind of situation.

What they told me floored me. They said this person was very lazy and didn't even bother to walk all the way down the hallway to his room. They said that if he walked to our room, he only had to walk 20 feet or so to get to our room. They said that the lazy asshole was trying to get the closest room possible by trying to get into our room.

I was like "are you fucking kidding me? This guy is calling us and yelling at us because he is trying to get into our room out of laziness?"

The security guard just shook his head and said "I know right? This happens on a weekly basis."

I was floored. I mean, seriously floored. How can someone be so lazy they try to get into someone else's room just to save themselves walking 20 feet down the hallway?
