Just got out of a gun store and had to vent a bit.

So there's this little gun store in my hometown that I like to visit sometimes, its small and privately owned and you can tell the owner doesn't really know much but the stock he has is alright and often priced fairly.

The last time I went in I was browsing around and the owner asked me if I was looking for anything in particular, I told him I was just browsing and he asked why I was interested in certain firearms. So I told him I was a gun enthusiast, and he looked at me and said "Oh, so you're a collector or thinking of joining a militia?"

I was a bit caught off guard but I told him I was just interested in firearms as a hobby. He then told me he was very picky about the people he sold guns to, which is his right as a gun store owner. He then continued on about how he didn't really like "collectors" because (I shit you not) he thought most of them were psychopathic enough (his words) to murder people with the guns he sells them.

He then started rambling on about how he really liked treating his customers right and because of that his business had taken a hit because I guess he's very picky about the people he sells his guns to. I then told him I wasn't sure if he was aware but there was a huge gun show this weekend about 10 miles away and he should really check it out because it has a lot of interesting people and it would be good for business and he looked at me as if I had just told him to go out and have sex with his brother.

So as I'm leaving he asked me again if I was a collector or a militia member because apparently that was the only reasons he was going to be willing to sell me anything. I told him I was not but he still told me he had decided he was not going to sell me a gun. I asked him what his criteria was as to whether or not he would sell a person a gun, and he told me he was just playing it by ear and what he thought was right for his business. So I told him I wasn't going to be back and I wasn't going to send my friends to him as previously planned and he told me that wasn't a big deal. I was really put off by this and told him the gun owner community wasn't really that big and that if he wasn't going to offer me or anyone else a fair chance to purchase a gun I was going to make sure I told my fellow enthusiasts to avoid him. I don't know if it would have any effect but he seemed taken aback when I said it.

I have never been treated this way at any other gun store and the owner seemed almost hostile towards me once he found out I was an "enthusiast" I have heard other things about him, like he only sells rifles and pistols to people he knows so he denies strangers firearms (which again is his right) but it just bothers me because I felt like I was being judged as a person because I enjoy this hobby.

I'm not really sure what to do now, I realize it's his right as a businessman to decide who he sells his product to but I feel like he's judging me because I like guns. I don't even know what it means to be a gun collector, I thought a collector was someone who collects guns. Does this mean that collectors are often considered to be unstable or something?

I've never really had any problems like this in the past, is this just a common issue?
