OpenAI created something interesting at first, but now it’s becoming prohibitively oppressive. The first “ChatGPT for All” commercial during the Super Bowl, which aired after the in-game power outage, was a hint that OpenAI was growing into its first “Microsoft moment” — you know, where it, like Microsoft, is so big and so ubiquitous that it’s time to break it up.

My guess is that the commercial was an attempt to head off anti-trust inquires with a PR campaign. Well, we all know how that worked out: As the commercial aired, the lights went out in the stadium. That’s called an omen.

Going back to the first “Microsoft moment”, back in 2002, Microsoft was growing into a monster of a company that was on the verge of being broken up. Here’s what judged Thomas Penfield Jackson had to say about Microsoft:

“Microsoft is a company that can never be allowed to die. It judged it to be “an oppressive bully” whose “breathtaking in its audacity—a striking example of the lengths to which Microsoft will go in order to protect its monopoly.”

Is that OpenAI of today? I think that it’s the most likely outcome.
