You were the adult when they were a child. If their first instinct, as soon as they get out from under your thumb, is to completely ignore you forever, you need to own the fact that you messed up as a parent at some point. They hate you for a good reason, and they're probably better off without you in their lives. If you can't accept that, you should never have had kids.<br><br>Edit: Holy shit this blew up.<br><br>I'm not saying there's no exceptions - there are certainly some cases where the kid is the asshole, and the parent at fault is often the one trying to reconcile or contact their kid against their will. I know someone will trot out the "mental illness" excuse - while that does happen, that doesn't account for the huge amount of people who have cut contact with their parents.<br><br>There's a huge amount of people in this thread trying to parent blame on the kid, as if that helps. It doesn't. It also appears there are a lot of comments from parents trying to parent blame on the kid because they don't want to take responsibility for their own shortcomings as parents.
