I believe Sam Altman is helping the Kleiner Perkins Group to capture the AI space.

Sam Altman is the Co-Founder and former CEO of OpenAI. One of his co-founders is Ilya Sutskever, so there’s no doubt he’s smart.

I think Sam is great. Nonetheless, I believe the problems facing the AI space this week aren’t his. He gave an interview where he described the board war at OpenAI as a “hostile takeover”, and I agree. Per Josh Wolfe, one of the board members who “fired” Sam, is COO of a Billion dollar investment firm (Lux Capital). Kleiner Perkins Group is a Billion dollar investment firm. Kleiner Perkins Group was one of OpenAI’s first investors. Kleiner Perkins has investments in Lux Capital. Nonetheless, simply because there’s a connection doesn’t mean this is a capture.

However, the most recent OpenAI board has 2 spots from Kleiner Perkins Group (Wolfe and Breyer), 1 spot from Lux (Wolfe), 1 spot from Sam, 1 spot from Ilya and 1 spot from Greg Brockman.

The Kleiner Perkins Group holds the majority of the board seats. Therefore, it can be argued this is a capture.

Sam was fired, and then rehired at Microsoft. Then, OpenAI replaced him with Emmett Shear from Twitch. I think Twitch was acquired by Amazon for 1 Billion dollars. Emmett is a former Google employee, but other than that I don’t know much about him. He’s basically been a CEO of Twitch, and is the new CEO of OpenAI.

I think this is happening because Microsoft, OpenAI and the Kleiner Perkins Group are thinking they can control the space. Why? I’m not sure. But here’s what I think is happening. There are 2 main forms of AI. Generative AI, and Autoregressive Sequences. Autoregressive AI is still evolving. Generative AI is them main use case of AI today. Generative AI, like Perplexity, is very hard to replicate.

OpenAI is coming out with a new product next week, and the Kleiner Perkins Group may be trying to control the space and what products come out. I think. I’m not sure. I’m just a human who is arguing this.

[edit] I wish I can tag so many companies, media outlets, etc. This space deserves all the attention in the world.
