How realistic is the plot of Ex Machina?

I'm a software engineer and don't have time to read some textbook on robotic behavioral science so here I am, looking for your thoughts.

It seems to me the Ex Machina was written with this question in mind: "What if we could truly create an artificial human being, and she was a woman?" I think this is a very intriguing plot device. From a software engineer's perspective, I think it almost goes without saying that we are lightyears away from creating a more advanced AI platform than what is depicted in the movie. I know that's sort of vague, but I don't know the best way to quantify it. I'm more interested in a behavioral analysis than systems analysis.

What if it were possible to create a humanoid robot indistinguishable from real people? How would a robot like Ava adapt to the world of humans? And what would be the human reaction to such an achievement?
