[OC] I can rotate my desk chair infinitely in the same direction. Each 360 degrees I turn uncovers a new reality.

I would frequently sit in my office and day dream about different versions of reality. I’d pretend that in other dimensions, different decisions were made, governments ran differently, or even that there were different inhabitants than people in the world. I’d fantasize about meeting them. Seeing what their world was like.

I’d daydream so fervently that I’d forget my surrounding.

I’d forget how lonely I was. In the real world, I felt insignificant, no one would even know I was gone.

One day I snapped. I clicked.

I sat in my office chair and rotated 360 degrees, envisioning another world. I closed my eyes, and imagined it. I imagined the earth was a massive ocean, with the chunks of land that existed just random islands here and there.

When I slowly opened my eyes, I noticed about 40 feet away from me, some buildings stacked on top of each other. The ground was made of water.

I stood up out of my chair and immediately began walking towards the water.

I heard ripples in the water, and I looked at about 13 different objects puncturing the surface. All of them had pairs of legs kicking their way through the water, and their bodies resembled a scorpion. All of the scorpion creatures had two massive human-like eyes on their heads.

The scorpions swam up to me, and I began to panic, knowing I was merely human and not adapted to living in the water. They all came up to the surface and about 13 voices echoed back and forth in my ears all at once. They were all talking to me, and I could understand them.

I answered all of their questions in unison. I was surprised at how quickly they spoke, but I seemed to be able to keep up.

The scorpions all stopped speaking and stared at me for a moment. Then, they all swam away. I watched them disappear under the water and into the horizon.

I turned my gaze back towards my office chair, took a deep breath and sat down in it, rotating another 360 degrees.

I closed my eyes and imagined a world where humans were gargantuan.

I pictured myself standing in an empty field, and slowly opened my eyes.

I was standing in an empty field. It was quiet, and I heard nothing but the wind. I slowly began walking in one direction, looking for something.

As I walked, I noticed a large figure in the distance.

As I walked closer, I realized it was a little girl. She was standing with her feet shoulder width apart, and her hands rested on her hips.

I continued to walk towards her, and when I got into earshot I called out to her.

“Hello?”

She didn’t respond, or even flinch. She just stood there staring at the ground. I realized that she was looking at me, and I was simply insignificant in size compared to her.

I walked up to her right boot and yelled out at the top of my lungs “Hello?”

She slowly picked her boot up off the ground, and I saw her peeking down at me. She was startled, and began to jump around. She stomped her boot back down on the ground, and I barely dodged it.

I began to run, and when I was a distance away I stopped and turned to see that she was staring at me.

“Who are you?” She asked. “Why are you in my backyard?”

I stared at her in awe. She was huge. She was beautiful. She was everything I ever wanted to see.

I said nothing. I just stared. She seemed to get annoyed with me and turned to walk away. All of her strides were massive, so she didn’t take very many steps before I could no longer see her.

I turned to find my office chair, and jogged towards it. I sat down and turned 360 degrees again.

I closed my eyes, and imagined a world where humans ruled mars. In this fantasy world, Mars had become an Earth like planet. The humans who inhabited it had built giant cities as tall as the red mountain peaks, and an atmosphere that created cloud storms and raining water.

I slowly opened my eyes, and found myself standing in the middle of a quiet martian street in the middle of the night. There were skyscrapers surrounding me in every direction. The street was littered with red sand, and I couldn’t tell whether it was from the planet, or merely rust from all of the metal.

I saw a light flicker in one of the skyscrapers, and I jogged towards it. I was stopped by a tall martian security guard, wearing an expensive black uniform.

“Can I help you?” He asked gruffly.

“I’m just looking for…” I started. He cut me off.

“I’m not asking you what you’re looking for. I’m asking how you got in here.” He slowly pulled out a small pistol and held it in his hand.

I began to panic, realizing I had no proof of who I was, and no means of getting into a secured building.

“I have nowhere else to go.” I pleaded.

The security guard looked at me and slowly put his pistol away. “You don’t seem like a threat.” He moved closer to me. “Come on.”

He slowly walked me towards an elevator. As we entered it, he clicked a button for floor 144. We rode the elevator in silence.

When the doors opened, we walked into an empty room. There were windows on all sides, and looking out of them, you could see the red planet in all its glory. The building was tall enough that you could see the curve of the Earth looking out of the window.

The guard offered me a drink, which I gratefully obliged. He sat across from me, and set a pistol on the table.

“If I had to guess, I’d say you’re an off-worlder. The way you talk seems to indicate you’re not from Mars.” He paused, taking a sip of his drink. “What brings you here?”

I thought to myself for a moment before responding.

“This is just a daydream. I can go back to where I came from at any time.” I said it nonchalantly, expecting him to laugh or realize I was merely insane.

He didn’t flinch.

“When you leave, there’s something I’d like you to do for me.” He continued to speak in a nonchalant tone as if he’d heard what I said.

I sat silently for a moment, and pondered his request. “What do you want me to do?”

“When you return to your reality, find the version of me there. I want you to give him my gun.” He slid the pistol across the table slowly.

“It’s just a pistol. Do you need it that badly?”

He slowly looked down, no longer making eye contact. “It’s not just a pistol. It’s my wife. She was killed in a tragic accident, and her consciousness was transferred into this pistol. It’s about the only thing I have left of her.” He paused, taking another sip. “In my world, we’ve long since made the jump to artificial bodies. It’s easier, more convenient, and more peaceful. I didn’t make the jump though. I keep this body so I can feel pain. Feel suffering. It reminds me I’m alive.” He paused again, this time merely staring at the table. “If you find the version of me where you’re from, please, give him the pistol.”

I nodded silently, and he handed me the pistol. I took it from him, and stood up from my seat on the couch. I slowly turned and walked back towards my office chair, rotating 360 degrees when I sat back down.

When I opened my eyes, I was sitting in my home office, the pistol sitting in front of me. I picked it up, admiring its weight, and wondering if the story was truly real.

I pondered the idea of rotating my chair again. I realized that there must be infinite versions of reality, some with me in them, some without.

I realized there must be infinite versions of reality with different things in them. Worlds that I couldn’t even imagine.

In the end, I came to the same realization that the Martian security guard had. I didn’t want to see any more. I was happy with my life. I had found happiness in my daydreams, and now I no longer needed them.

I never rotated my chair again.
