Why would a couple save their dirty underwear to put in trash bag to be thrown away outside?

Was at my boyfriends moms house clearing out her room she just passed away. Found a trash bag full of dirty underwear. Both my boyfriends dad and her have passed away. Why would they save their dirty underwear? Was it common practice back in the day?? She was born in 1942
