Sometimes it take a lot of time to get to the other side. But I know we will make it, because we have to.

As I walk, the snow crunches beneath my boots. It’s not much but it’s the only armor I have for the harsh winter weather. I didn’t grow up in a harsh climate and my skin is not used to the extreme temperature.

Luckily, I have my friend Sophie to help me navigate the weather. We’ve never had to deal with snow before but we’ve researched together. She reminds me that frost bite can happen in under 15 minutes.

She’s smart and I’m glad to have her as a companion.

“What is frost bite?” I ask her in a whisper.

Frostbite is an ugly injury: it is the actual freezing of body tissues caused by prolonged exposure to low temperatures. The affected areas become numb, white, and hard to the touch. Gangrene is common in severe cases, and in very bad cases, the affected extremity can actually freeze, turning black and dying.

Sophie gives me a summary of what she’s learned.

“Then let’s not get frost bite,” I say.

I’m a single mother to a beautiful little girl. We are just trying to get to the other side. And when we arrive there, we plan on settling down. But we’re not there yet. We’re still on our journey.

My little girl’s name is Caroline and she loves my friend Sophie. She’s very friendly and Sophie often gives her compliments. We are a happy family.

Sophie and I have been together for years. The two of us along with our daughter against the world. Occasionally we get a pet. My daughter loves animals. It’s our family dog Jack that noticed the hobo first.

Jack is a loyal dog. He doesn’t take to many people and he is often protective of my daughter. But he doesn’t like hobos.

“Jack, what’s wrong boy?” I ask him as he wags his tail.

He barks in response.

I look to my right and don’t see anything. So I look to my left and see my friend Sophie. I wave at her and she waves back.

I wave again.

And I don’t see her.

I take my daughter’s hand and walk to her. But when I reach the spot where I last saw her, she’s gone.

I start to panic. Sophie is strong and can take of herself. I’m not to worried about her. But I’m worried about what took her. I hold Caroline close.

“Jack, where did she go?” I ask him.

He takes off running in a straight line. He didn’t even take a second to think about it. It’s as if Sophie had an enemy and he knew who it was.

I look down at Caroline. She’s scared and doesn’t know what’s going on.

But I do.

My daughter and I were just wishing for a good night. We wanted to settle down and enjoy our evening. But we can’t do that now.

I grab my daughter’s hand and start to run after Jack. I don’t like running but I have to. Jack knows where he’s going and I have to trust him. My daughter knows where we’re going and she doesn’t have to like it.

We’re looking for Sophie.

And whatever took her.

We run until we’re about a mile away from our campsite. The entire time we run, Jack is about 100 yards in front of us. Sophie is smart and I’m not to worried about her. But I’m worried about what took her.

My daughter and I stop to catch our breath. But Jack doesn’t stop. Jack keeps running.

“Jack, stop!”

But he doesn’t.

I have to get Jack. He’s the only one who knows where Sophie is. And he’s the only one who knows where the threat is.

We keep running. We’re outside the boundaries of the camps now. We’re out in the open. We can’t see very far and we can’t tell what’s out in the open.

We can’t see.

We can’t see.

We can’t even see.

But we can see Jack. Jack’s still running. Jack’s still ahead of us. Jack knows what he’s doing. Jack’s smart.

We run even faster now.

We lose Jack.

We can’t see him anymore.

I grab my daughter and squeeze her.

“Do not move,” I tell her.

She nods and stays in place. I walk a few feet away and yell: “Jack!”

He doesn’t answer.

“Jack!”

“What is Jack doing,” my daughter asks.

I ignore her and yell again.

“Jack!”

But there is still no answer.

“Jack!”

And I hear a noise behind me. I turn to see what it is and I see a hobo.

My skin crawls.

This is the enemy.

If I’m going to get Sophie, I’m going to have to take care of the enemy.

I grab my daughter and turn to run.

But it’s too late.

The hobo is on top of us.

It pins me to the ground with its hands.

I try to move but I’m frozen in fear.

The hobo raises its hand to bite me.

And Sophie saves me.

She comes out of nowhere.

She swings an ax and kills the hobo.

She kills the enemy.

And she saves me and my daughter.

But it’s not over yet. There could be more.

We can’t see in the dark.

We have to find a way to see.

I pull out a flare and light it.

And we see.

We can finally see.

“Mommy what’s that,” Caroline asks.

I look down at her and see that’s she’s looking at something.

I look to see what she’s looking at and I see what looks to be a dead woman. She’s hanging from a tree.

“Let’s go see,” I say.

I grab Caroline’s hand and walk Sophie and Jack over to the hanging figure.

Sometimes it takes a lot of time to get to the other side. But I know we will make it, because we have to.

I never thought I would be in a situation like this. But here I am. And I’m not alone.

My beautiful daughter is with me.

And my friend Sophie.

Sophie is the love of my life.

I take my time as I walk closer to the figure. Jack is still on high alert.

She’s dead.

She’s been dead for a while.

“What is she wearing,” my daughter asks.

“She’s a hobo,” I say.

Jack growls.

And then I see it.

On her waist are the words:

Hobos (in the spirit of the show TWD)

I read the words out loud.

“What does it mean?” I ask Sophie.

Sophie shrugs.

“What is it,” my daughter asks.

Sometimes it take a lot of time to get to the other side. But I know we will make it, because we have to.

“I don’t know,” I say.

Jack barks.

“What is it Jack,” I ask.

Jack growls.

And we hear the sound of shuffling.

We turn around.

And we see it.

It’s the hobos.

And they’re coming for us.
