The US president is a Neo-Nazi. Half of the country supports him. We can explain this historically: post-Cold War neoliberalism has created unprecedented inequality, real wages have remained stagnant since the 1970's, and conditions have grown ripe for a fascist movement. Material conditions have caused this, real and imagined, backlash of the white American poor against the minority groups they blame for their misery.

But how do we *stop this*?

I'm a white guy from Upstate NY. I used to be a Republican, until I got an honest job and discovered that being a conservative Republican doesn't make economic sense.

My parents are lifelong Democrats. They were the ones who convinced me to register and vote for Obama in 2008. We have never been the type of people to rant about politics. Politics is something we discuss over alcoholic beverages at family gatherings, like baseball or Evolution, not something we engage in on social media or among friends.

Trump changed that. He tapped into something in the culture. Half of my high school friends now parrot his talking points: "grab em by the pussy", "some people are just assholes", "Nazis are bad but so are Antifa" and "if you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to hide".

There are good people on both sides.

I don't feel like I can change their minds anymore. I feel like I've done everything I can for my friends, my family and my community to instill in them democratic values and a sense of equality. But still Trump won in 2016, and still I think he will win reelection.

The modern US feels like the Weimar Republic. The economy is bad, global tensions are high, and a charismatic leader has come along to challenge the established order and create a new Germany/USA.

How do we stop this?
