I would've been a victim of a kidnapping at an airport.

I'm a 19 year old female and I'm just gonna call my boyfriend "Jeremy" for the sake of convenience.

Jeremy and I were flying from Minnesota to Colorado back in December 2019 to visit my sister and her husband for Christmas since they couldn't come home. I had just gotten out of the bathroom and Jeremy was out of sight. I figured he stopped at a kiosk to buy something so I found a row of seats and waited for him. After 5 minutes went by and he still hadn't found me I decided to look for him. Then I get stopped by a guy I've never seen before and he starts chatting me up. I'm just vaguely interested in the conversation (I would've been more interested if Jeremy was there) and after about another 5 minutes of chatting with him he says "Hey, do you think you could do me a huge favor? I forgot my wallet in my car so would you mind paying for my coffee and I'll pay you back when we find an ATM?". I was expecting this because I've been in a similar situation before so I happily volunteer to pay.

He heads over to the coffee kiosk and I follow him. I hand my card to the employee to pay and she asks for my ID. Then I start to pat all my pockets and realize that my underwear pocket where I carry my ID in has been cut. Somehow, I managed to not feel it when he did it. I tell her my ID is missing and she just shrugs and says I can pay with card and that's it.

So now the guy is getting suspicious of me because he thinks I'm lying and I tell him I'll just pay him back at an ATM as I originally said. When we head towards the ATM I "realize" I don't have my debit card.... because it's in my ID case. So we sit down at a row of seats again and I make a phone call to my boyfriend (or at least I thought I did) and I tell him I lost my ID and would he happen to have it? And he tells me he has it.... and that he's calling the police. And that's when I notice something is weird because the voice on the other line doesn't sound like my boyfriend and when I look at my phone I realize I dialed the wrong number. It was a number I have saved as "Dad #2" which is my dad's old number that my mom now has.

I tell the guy on the phone I thought I calledJeremy and he asks who this other guy is. I explain the situation and he tells me to get out of there immediately. I tell the guy I have to go and he insists on helping me find my ID. Then I start walking away from him and he tries to follow me so I start walking faster and I lose him in the crowd. As I'm walking I call Jeremy and tell him what just happened and he meets up with me at a fruit stand.

So we tell airport security what happened and they never found the guy and never saw him on any cameras but the employee at the coffee kiosk saw us talking and said she found my ID on the ground after I left.

I'm really glad my "wrong dial" saved me from potentially being kidnapped and I can't stress enough how important it is for us as women to be vigilant in public.
