This is huge, as non-addictive treatments already exist for heroin, alcohol and nicotine. If we are able to identify those at risk of becoming addicts, we might be able to cure them before it's too late. Drugs would be less harmful and we'd be far closer to living in a world free of addiction. We could just cure people as they're diagnosed, and it'd be much, much easier to identify what causes addiction in the first place.

>James E. Eyles, the CEO and co-founder of InterveXion, told CNN the two drugs that could be used for the treatment, known as ITX-203 and ITX-206, “dramatically altered the way animals self-administer cocaine and methamphetamine”.

> “The animals that received the treatment did not continue to perform the behaviour that would give them access to cocaine or methamphetamine even when offered it for free,” said Eyles.

> “If these findings translate to humans, they could lead to a way to treat methamphetamine and cocaine use disorders without the significant side effects that are seen with current medication.”
