I have lobster bite scars on about 20% of my body. This happened because of a tradition my mom and aunt started when I was a toddler and my cousins were older. They would toss lobsters in the back seat of the car unbagged or in a plastic bag with us and drive around for upwards of 4 hours before going to a restaurant to cook and eat them. By the time I was 5 I had already started telling them no but they still expected me to get in the car. I told them that if they did that, I would kick and toss those lobsters whith my feet and would not stop until I got out of the car. So they would just put them in the front seats or the trunk.

I have told my mom that I will not take my kids to lobster restaurants, to cook lobsters at home or purchase them for holiday meals any longer. She got pissed and said it was no different than buying chicken or fish or steak. I said it was completely different in the way they were treated and that I would not participate in or endorse that type of animal abuse, torture or neglect. She told my BIL and he got pissed and called me to tell me that I am a disrespectful asshole and that I ruined his plans to take everyone out to a seafood restaurant on new years day.

I told him that I didn’t care that he was pissed that I was standing on principle and that he could take his kids. I wasn’t any where near stopping him. He went on a rant that lobster was the only thing the restaurant was known for and that I was a jerk. I repeated again that I didn’t care that he was pissed that I wasn’t going to take my kids there and that I was gonna do what was best for my kids and that if he felt like sulking then he could but my decision was made. He called me a jackass and hung up.

My mother called soon after and told me that I should be ashamed of myself. She told me that I was an embarrassment and a baby for letting a little thing like scars and lobster affect my decisions. I asked her what she would do if I tossed lobsters on my younger cousins in the back seat of the car. She told me that wouldn’t happen and that my sister would never do that. I said she should not be so sure. She still went on about how I was an AH for not participating in a tradition like that.

AITA?
