What are some historical events that occurred in your country that most people are unaware of?

I'm an Australian and I love learning about different aspects of my country's history. I found that a lot of people don't know about the actions Australia took during the First Sino-Japanese war. Australia sent soldiers to fight against the Chinese in Taiwan in order to support the Japanese, however it is not widely known as it was a one sided affair and Australia didn't sustain many casualties. It is still interesting to note that even though Australia has a dismal human rights record towards the Chinese they still supported China in the Second Sino-Japanese war.
