Throwaway, because my husband knows my main. With all the stories I’ve been reading on here, I figured I’d share something that happened to me and will stick with me forever.

This happened nine years ago when I was 16. I’ll never forget this night. It was a weekend one of the worst snowstorms we’ve ever had, where I live, 15inches of snow. I would wake up periodically during the night just to look at how beautiful outside was, and to see how much it accumulated. At around 2am I woke up, looked outside, and when I looked back, I saw a man standing in front of my bed just looking at me. He didn’t move until I pushed the covers back and was ready to run. It was the weirdest thing. I ran to my parents room, which was across the hall, and jumped into their bed. I was freezing but also terrified. I told them what happened, and they looked high and low in the house, but found nobody. We even called the police, but they refused to come out because of the road conditions. I was so upset they didn’t take me seriously and I refused to sleep on my own ever again until they found out what happened. The next night I did the exact same thing, woke up on and off all night, but this time my father was waiting in my room and when the man appeared, my father followed him through the house until he left through the front door. My father then ran to my mothers room to tell her what happened and she immediately called the police. She was very pissed off that they refused to come out again. But this time they had proof. After searching the house they realized that the roof of one of the rooms was pulled up and the man could come and go whenever he wanted. The police looked through the attic, and found pictures of my sister and I, they found all of our underwear, and my diaries. They said that he was coming in and out for almost a year and was even sleeping in the attic sometimes while we were home. I can’t even begin to explain how I felt. I was so relieved they found out the truth, but it freaked me out to think this man lied in one of our rooms while we slept. They found out it was our next-door neighbor’s son and he was arrested and put on house arrest. My parents said that whenever they would ask us to do something and we would say no, like mow the lawn, they would do it and explain that we were lazy and not doing our chores. So I assume that’s how he found a way into our house and attic. When we moved to Arizona nine years ago, my parents never told anyone else on the block what happened.

I’ll never forget what happened that night. And it’s always made me fearful of my surroundings. But I will always be so grateful for my parents and how much they love me and my sister.
