some of you already know why I stopped subbing. I never presumed that I was considered a member of the "faculty" as a sub; my job was to do as I was told, babysit and take next to nothing in payment, and be grateful that I had a job at all.

I subbed for 14 heavily chaotic years, over two decades for one school district. I was presumed to be a member of faculty at one school and treated like total and utter shit by "real teachers" at another.

The low point was when the "real faculty" began to get vaccinated, and we, along with the lunch ladies and the janitorial staff, were left behind. The real faculty was vaccinated while the support staff wasn't. I caught Covid from a Kindergartener. I nearly died. When I came back, I was given the shortest end of the stick I could ever possibly imagine. No one gave a fuck that I almost died, or that I was treated like garbage while I was out sick. In fact, I got a phone call telling me that they needed all the subs they could get, and could I sub as soon as possible?

I nearly cried, I was so angry. I nearly cried, and then, I never cried again. I made a decision that day; I would never, ever sub again. Fuck the educational system. Fuck the faculty who treated me like I was nothing, and the districts who also treated me as nothing, and the parents who treated me as though I was a bad person for leaving.

I'm now a customer service representative for a large sporting goods company. They treat me so much better than I was treated as a teacher. The money is better, the benefits are better, and no one ever spits on me or calls me a "bitch" or worse.

Fuck the modern educational system, and if you're a teacher, or an RA, or a lunch lady, or custodian, get out. Get the fuck out. Get out while you still have your sanity.

Edit 1: never ever presumed myself faculty as a sub, edited to make myself clearer.

Edit 2: Wow! Thank you for the awards! I am.Thread winner of the week, y'all! I am overwhelmed, and I am so happy that this resonated with so many of you. Thank you all so, so much!
