Have you ever read a piece by Hemingway and that was the first day you realized that what most of this community is writing is what they perceive to be well-written fan fiction?

The general audience of this chamber is not good at writing. It’s not your fault if you didn’t realize that. Many of you have never read a book. In fact if you read books for pleasure you are in a very small minority. But the only truly valuable writing is that which is taken from some place that truly exists; an experience, a dream, an idea. Not a plot of a movie transplanted into a fantasy setting with fantasy characters.

Writing is not plot. Many of you are so fussy about how to write a plot that you neglect the thing that truly makes up the heart and soul of a story: language. Many of you have never read a book because reading a book takes time and effort. It is so much easier to be inspired by something that you can watch in two hours, but not only is this boring to read, it is not truly yours. If you want to be a writer you must read. Adult literary fiction. No exceptions.

I’m sure that this post will get a lot of backlash but that’s not a surprise. People that can’t write like to double down, and for the twenty people that I just crushed I’m sorry. In my mind eye I am seeing very vivid pictures of all of the many times that I have doubled down on something that I knew was wrong for the sake of pride. And if there’s one thing that we all know is that pride doesn’t get you anywhere. What gets you somewhere is actually doing the work and putting in effort.

There’s a link to my short stories in my profile. Read them. Learn something if you can. But if you wish to double down on your shitty writing, then keep on writing.
