Monetizing trash

I have this idea that an app where people could pick up trash and get money for it could be an incredibly profitable business, while also a good move for the planet. There is already an app like this that exists, but my idea is to not pick up trash yourself, but to contract out people to do it. Here’s how it would work.

You have 2 people in the system: the collectors and the contractee’s. The collectors are the people looking to make money off this, and the contractee’s are the people who hire people to pick up trash in a certain area.

Here is how it works:

The collectors download the app and create an account. They can then view the contracts available in the system. The contracts consist of a location, time period, amount of trash to be picked up, and pay. The trash is ranked in difficulty from 1-5, 1 being the easiest and 5 being the hardest. Whether it is hard or easy depends on the weather conditions, accessibility, and amount of trash. So a rate 1 would be a sunny day with moderate temperatures, little to no rain, and a short distance from the road, and the pay for that is a base pay times difficulty times amount of trash. So if you have 1-20 pounds of trash, that is one point, and 21-40 is two, and so on.

If you want to take a contract, you can select it and then pay a small fee to choose that contract. This is to prevent people from picking up all the contracts and then not picking up the trash, leaving it abandoned. Whether you complete the contract or not, you will not get your fee back.

Now there is a community part of the app. You can join a group of other trash collectors to talk about previous collection, tips for dangerous and hard collection, or to talk to collectors in your area and create friendships.

So now that we have created the contract part of the app, we need to create the people funding the app. This is where the contractee’s come in.

To become a contractee you have to own a business, and have it verified. So you can’t just create a business and then contract people to pick up trash.

The contractee’s create the contracts that the collectors view in the app. They can choose the amount of trash they want to be picked up, the period, time, and of course the pay. But they pay more than the amount that they say, they pay an extra 25% of what they pay out as the contractors pay.

What does the contractee pay for? As a contractee you don’t actually give money to the collectors, so it doesn’t appear as you are losing money. What you pay for is the right to brag that you are paying people to pick up trash in front of your business, and the right to display you paying for trash cleanup.

You can display this in any way you want, the app gives you lots of options for this. Whether it be an ad, a sign, a commercial, or whatever else you can create.

How does trash get turned in? As a collector, you find the nearest trash dump, and there is a scanner you can scan on a phone and it scans the trash and pays you.

So I need some software developers to allow people to sign up for the app and fund it, and to make sure that the scanners are connected to the phones and that the phones are all connected and everything works right.

As stated earlier, the pay is a base pay times difficulty times amount of trash. But how do we figure out what the base pay is? As a contractee, they pay what they want, but what do they pay out as trash? The base pay is the average of all the contractee’s pay, minus 30%.

That brings me to the final point, what happens to the extra money? Where does the 30% and 25% go? Well the 30% is used to fund the cost of paying trash dumps to have the trash collection sites, and the 25% of the pay is used to pay the cost of the creators of the app.

That is my idea, and I think I am ready to start this into production.

Please share your thoughts and let me know what you think.
