Rush Limbaugh's "Tancredo call" is a great example of setting the tone for a story.

A while ago I decided to make a trip to the gym to get in a good workout. While I was on the treadmill I decided to listen to talk radio. In the middle of the show, call after call, just random callers calling in to chat with the host. Then a young man stating he was a college student call in stating, "Hi, just wanted to let you know I know when you were in college, you used to bully because of race, and you have no idea what it's like to be a black kid today." The host, Rush Limbaugh, asked why he brought up his college days and asked how he know what it is like to be a kid today. I'm thought this was a bit of a tangent, especially since the young man made the statement without the host ever saying anything about racism. The host was very upset, then let the boy go after a few minutes.

The host was just super mad that the same man who brought up the bullying, had the same man make a post on a different call a few minutes later. This time he brought up the bully statement again, and stating he was a kid in the call a few minutes ago, and decided to make up a new name and call again, call himself "Tancredo" then just hung up. I couldn't help but laugh, then the host laughed too. He stated he intentionally made up a name of a real person who was just debating on CNN, Tom Tancredo. For those of you who don't know, Tom Tancredo is a vocal critic of illegal immigration. He was known most notably for his stance on immigration, stating he would require English to be the national language. He most notably stating he would require the pledge of allegiance to be recited in English.

So now when setting the tone for setting a story, I think of this call. The story has a setting, and it most likely has a similar tone. Is it a story of just two random people meeting in a diner, or is it setting the tone of hostility, a black man calling in to a white radio host stating he knows what it is like to be black, with the host upset and yelling back. This helps me set the tone for the story, and help me make the story flow into the next scene with a similar tone.
