Was there ever a period in history where people had to live with the fear of a nuclear war breaking out over a long period of time like we do today?

With the recent situation between Israel and Palestine, the war in Ukraine, the proxy war in the Taiwan strait, North Korea's endless missile testing, and the possibility of a cold war turning hot between the US China, the world is in a really tense state today, similar to that of the Cold War. This is the situation that I am referring to, where everything seems like it can escalate to a global nuclear war at any moment.
