The World is Changing: What are the Implications for Investors?

Reading this excellent post from r/ethtrader made me think a lot about what are the investments that make sense in this brave new world that we are headed to.

Here is the whole post:

*****

In the 1980’s, when the news was talking about climate change, it was always talking about the polar ice-caps melting and a flood that would wash away our great cities and a new era of hunger and drought would ensue. Some people were talking about how the warming of the planet was going to make certain areas uninhabitable. I remember one scientist talking on the news about how some parts of the planet would get colder and some would get warmer. But the answer was always that it was so far away that it was nothing to worry about.

In 2004, we started to see the first hurricane superstorms hit the planet. The world watched in horror as a hurricane swept through south florida with 270km/hr winds and swept away several towns in one fell swoop. In 2008, hurricane Gustav took out the town of Jacmel, Haiti and set off a chain reaction of mudslides that took the lives of thousands of people.

As the years went on, the frequency and intensity of the superstorms increased. One year, it was the Philippines that was hit by a typhoon that destroyed parts of the capital city of Manila. Another year, it was Vietnam. Then one year it was India.

In the past 10 years, the pattern of hurricanes became so regular that the media began to ignore them. ?The storm of the century? was now a yearly occurrence. We were kinda used to it. After all, most people who lived in countries that hurricanes would regularly hit would just board up their houses and evacuate to safe zones until the storm blew over.

Then Australia burned to the ground.

I remember the news talking about the wildfires that were burning in the pacific northwest, but I thought it was just the usual news talking about the yearly fires that burned in Oregon. Then I started hearing about the massive bushfires that were burning in California that burned several towns to the ground.

When I heard about the bushfires in Australia, I thought it was just the regular bushfires that burned every year and that they had it under control. Then the news started to tell us that a whole state was on fire and the situation was spiraling out of control.

They started to tell us that a whole ecosystem was collapsing. The koalas were nearly extinct. The kangaroos were nearly extinct. Half of Australia’s forests were gone. fishes were dying in the rivers. The local wildlife was dying out at an incredible rate. The government was being accused of arson and propaganda. ?It’s just bushfires? they said. Then parts of Sydney started to burn.

As the years go by, I predict that the intensity of the climate disasters will get worse and worse. Some areas of the planet will be uninhabitable, while others will be more livable. I imagine that the weather will continue to be unpredictable and patterns will change every few years. I imagine that the next generation will look forward to a life of climate refugees, water wars, food shortages, and the end of the supply chain as we know it.

I am sure that many of you here believe that parts of the world will become uninhabitable in the coming decades. What investments make sense in a world with climate disasters? How will you protect your wealth and your prosperity in a world that is rapidly changing?

Remember when you used to make fun of preppers? This is the world that we live in now. What are you going to do to prepare? What assets are you going to dump? What skills are you going to learn? What are you going to invest in?

The world is changing. How are you going to adapt to the new world?

****

The world is moving forward with or without you. The answer is always ?invest in the future?

So what are the assets that are going to thrive in the future?
