I was talking to someone about the news today and they brought up the idea that Trump could resign before the election and he could possibly avoid being prosecuted once he leaves office. They offered as evidence the fact that Nixon was pardoned for treason and he wasn't prosecuted for it. I'm not sure I buy that the Justice Department would let him resign and then let him go without a day of prosecution, I know it did happen with Nixon but he was pardoned in the process. Could the president resign and not have charges pressed against him? If he resigned, do you think he would have charges pressed against him?

Edit: I know that technically Pence would have to pardon him, he would be president at that point in time, but for the purpose of the argument, I will just say President Trump.

Edit 2: I know that the fact that Trump isn't going to step down is apparent. My friend was making the argument that it was possible and I was just using this sub to see what people thought about this theory.
