Stop people from breaking their Macro Photography gear

I have been experimenting with macro photography for some time now and it's a never ending disappointment to hear about people scratching their Macro lenses or breaking the adapter because they have no idea it's fragile or they didn't check whether the gear is compatible.

Initially I thought this is the same for wide angle and telephoto lenses as well but after researching I found out it's not. It's really hard to break wide angle lens by touching the glass and it's hard to break telephoto prime lenses as well.

I'm just slowly moving to macro photography and I'm just 2 years in but everyday I hear about people breaking or damaging their macro photography gear which is really a shame because they are really expensive.

I'm in reality a programming person and I have no idea how to build a physical adapter that will have a "breaking point" so that we can get a signal when the adapter is extending beyond it's limit. It's not impossible but definitely not in my current knowledge realm.

We may also need to have a relatively accurate data about the extension or retraction of the lens because the "breaking point" is extending or retracting speed dependent as well. Do you think a software only solution can help us to build a system to stop people from breaking their Macro Photography gear?

Please let me know if you have any questions or need more information.
