The room was dimly lit. There was the faint smell of disinfectant hanging in the air, like you'd find in a hospital, but that only seemed to heighten the stench of sweat that surrounded me. A dim fluorescent strip in the ceiling flickered softly above me.

I groggily opened my eyes, a stuttering haze that seemed to take forever. A blonde-haired woman sat to my right, her eyes wide and fixed on me. I should know her, but I had no idea who she was.

"Hi," she said. Her voice was soft and calm. "Do you remember anything?"

I tried to speak, but my voice caught in my throat. A man sitting behind her, with the most perfect beard I'd ever seen, handed me a plastic cup filled with water. I gulped it greedily, taking a moment for the liquid to work its way down my throat before I tried to speak again.

"Why are we here?"

The blonde woman shook her head. "I have no idea."

The man unfolded his arms. "Do you remember anything at all?"

I thought back. Where had I been before this? My mind was a complete blank. That realisation scared me more than I thought it would.

"Listen, I don't mean to sound rude," I said. "But who are you? I don't recognise any of you."

The blonde woman's face twisted into a frown, but the man just shook his head. "We don't recognise you either."

"How long have I been here?"

The woman shrugged. "You were here when I woke up. Do you remember your name, at least?"

I thought back again. My name. If I could just remember that...

"I'm... I'm Jamie," I said finally, a relieved smile spreading across my face.

The two people in front of me smiled back. "Well, nice to meet you Jamie," the woman said. "I'm Mia, and this is Leo. Although..." she turned to Leo, and he shook his head.

"I don't think that's our real names," he said. "I mean, Mia is. But that's not my name."

"What do you mean?"

"I had a dream," he said. "A dream that I was in a jungle, fighting some kind of war. I was talking to a friend I'd made, and he called me... something else. I can't quite remember, but it wasn't Leo."

Mia frowned. "I had no dreams."

"Why do you think we're here?"

Leo leaned forward. "I don't know, but I think we should focus on finding a way out before we start asking questions."

I hunched forward in my seat, my eyes fixed on Leo. "How do you plan on doing that?"

Leo shrugged. "I haven't figured that part out yet, but I plan on."

"I don't think we should try to escape," Mia said. "I think we should talk. If we were put here for a reason, then we should figure out why."

"Why do you think we were put here?"

Mia thought for a moment. "I think we were brought here for some reason. That there's something we can do. Otherwise, what's the purpose?"

A hand touched my arm. I looked to my left, where a man with jet black hair sat.

"You think we were brought here?" he asked. "That we weren't born here?"

I leaned back in my seat. "I don't know. But I know I wasn't born here. And I don't think you were either."

The black-haired man nodded. "You're right. I remember something. A forest, I think, made of trees of the brightest, most beautiful colours I've ever seen. And I think I had wings. I was flying, and I could feel music playing all around me."

Mia frowned. "I don't remember anything like that. But I remember that my name is Mia."

I smiled. "Well, that's something, at least."

Leo nodded. "Yeah, we can work with that. Mia, you said you think we were brought here."

"Why do you think that?"

Mia thought for a moment. "I don't know if this makes sense... but I remember having an argument with someone. I don't know who, but they were upset and I was trying to calm them down. I think they might have brought me here."

Leo's face twisted into a thoughtful expression. "That makes sense."

I frowned. "Why would your friend bring you here?"

"I think it might be something bigger than that," Leo said. "I think we might all have been brought here."

---

This is a piece of creative writing for my English class, and since I technically wrote it with my friends in mind I figured I'd post it here too. I'd love to hear any of your thoughts!

I'm planning on a four part story, so any feedback now is much appreciated.
