We all have heard the argument “Korean is similar to Japanese and Chinese like Spanish is similar to Portuguese and Italian”

Not entirely true. Spanish and Portuguese are both Romance languages and are more similar than Korean and Japanese are. Korean is an agglutinative language and Japanese is an isolating language with agglutinative characteristics. They’re vastly different grammatically. The writing systems are different. Korean has Korean and Chinese characters while Japanese has a combination of Kanji (Chinese characters), Kana (hiragana and katakana) and the Roman alphabet.

Korea and Japan actually have more in common culturally with Chinese culture than they do with each other.

So let’s stop saying these three languages are similar.
