I've been rewatching anime from 2010 and earlier and the difference in the quality of writing is staggering

Like hey I get it, animation-wise we're in a golden age and we're getting a lot of really good stuff out of Japan lately, but the writing on average has definitely taken a hit. A lot of it is absolutely bland and generic, and some of it is just straight up incoherent. I just rewatched Ergo Proxy, and it's like yeah this was a real labor of love for some people. It's not even close to my favorite anime, but it's a great example of your average show from back in the day being better written than your average show now.

I've always heard the excuse that there's just more anime now than ever before, so of course there's more bad shows. But it's not even that, I think there's just a lot less passion being put into anime now. It seems really, really rare to find shows like Psycho Pass or Gunbuster where it's obvious from watching it that there's a human being behind it who's trying to make a great story happen. I also think this is why a lot of anime is so formulaic now, like if someone finds a recipe that works they just keep churning out the same bs over and over.
